- Controllerless modems have some advantages over RPI modems
- (eg. they're software upgradable and implement almost all of the modem in
- the host CPU and memory instead of kind of cludging the modem and the host
- CPU together), but it also has some disadvantages (will simply not work
- outside of Windows). Also, USR isn't the first to make modems of this
- design, AT&T has been shipping a controllerless chipset for a while now
- (although I don't know if a 28.8 incarnation exists just yet).

- USR already has two modems with FlashROM (the Courier and
- Sportster Vi with DSVD).

- I'm really not sure what the expanse would be, but in the low-end
- modem market the general trend seems to be to use the absolute cheapest
- hardware possible.
